Behind the Pages: How The Woodland Secret Came to Life

Every book begins with a question. For The Woodland Secret — the third adventure in the Woodland Wonder Tales series — that question was: What happens when the forest keeps a secret?

In this post, we're taking you behind the pages of Book 3 to share the story of how it came to life — from the first spark of an idea, through the creative process, to the finished book that's now in the hands of young readers around the world. If you've ever wondered what goes into making a children's book, or if you're a fan of Hariët and Finnigan who wants to know more about their latest adventure, this one's for you.

Where It All Began

The Woodland Wonder Tales series was born from a simple belief: that children deserve stories that are beautiful, warm, and genuinely engaging — stories that respect their intelligence and imagination, that introduce them to the natural world, and that leave them feeling that the world is a rich and wonderful place.

Book 1, Hariët the Hedgehog and Finnigan the Fox, introduced our two beloved characters and established the woodland world they inhabit. Book 2, Hariët, Finnigan, and the Swamp Adventure, took them beyond the familiar forest into new and challenging territory. By the time we began thinking about Book 3, we knew we wanted to deepen the mystery — to give young readers something to puzzle over, to discuss, and to return to.

The idea of a secret felt right. Secrets are universally compelling — for children and adults alike. They create tension, invite speculation, and reward careful attention. And in a woodland setting, secrets feel entirely natural: the forest is full of things hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered by those who know how to look.

Developing the Story

The story development process for The Woodland Secret went through many iterations. Early drafts explored different kinds of secrets — a hidden creature, a buried treasure, a forgotten place. What we kept returning to was the idea of a secret that, once revealed, changes how you see everything that came before it.

We wanted the mystery to be genuinely engaging for young readers — not so obvious that it loses its power, but not so obscure that it feels unfair. We tested early drafts with children of different ages, watching their faces as they listened, noting where they leaned in and where their attention wandered, asking them what they thought the secret might be.

Their responses were illuminating. Children are remarkably perceptive readers. They notice details that adults overlook. They ask questions that cut straight to the heart of the story. And they have an unerring instinct for when a story is being honest with them and when it isn't.

Creating the Characters

Hariët and Finnigan have been with us since the beginning, and by Book 3 they feel like old friends — to us and, we hope, to the children who have grown up reading their adventures. One of the joys of writing a series is watching characters develop over time, accumulating history and depth with each new story.

In The Woodland Secret, we wanted to show a new side of both characters. Hariët's curiosity — always one of her defining traits — is tested in new ways. Finnigan's loyalty is put under pressure. And the friendship between them, which has always been at the heart of the series, is deepened by the challenges they face together.

We also introduced some new characters in Book 3 — woodland inhabitants who have been living in the background of the earlier books, glimpsed but never fully seen. Bringing them into the foreground felt like a natural evolution of the world we've been building.

The Illustration Process

The illustrations in the Woodland Wonder Tales series are central to the experience of the books. They're not decorations — they're storytelling. They carry information that the text doesn't, reward careful looking, and create the visual world that children inhabit when they read.

For The Woodland Secret, we wanted the illustrations to carry some of the mystery of the story — to hide things in plain sight, to reward re-reading, to give children something to discover on their second and third encounters with the book. There are details in the illustrations that only make sense once you know the secret — and we love the idea of children going back to look for them.

The colour palette for Book 3 is richer and slightly more atmospheric than the earlier books — deeper greens, longer shadows, the quality of light that comes in the late afternoon when the forest feels most alive and most mysterious.

From Manuscript to Finished Book

The journey from finished manuscript to published book involves many more steps than most people realise. Editing, design, layout, colour correction, print testing — each stage requires careful attention and often reveals things that need to be adjusted.

One of the decisions we're most proud of is making the Woodland Wonder Tales books available as PDF printables. This means that families anywhere in the world can access the books instantly, print them at home or at a local print shop, and have them in their hands within minutes of purchase. It also means that the books are accessible at a price point that works for more families — something we feel strongly about.

For families who prefer a physical book, our Book 1 physical edition with international shipping shows what the books look like in print — and we hope to make physical editions of all three books available in the future.

What Readers Are Saying

Since The Woodland Secret was published, we've been moved and delighted by the responses from families around the world. Children have written to us about their theories regarding the secret. Parents have told us about the conversations the book has sparked at bedtime. Teachers have shared how they've used it in the classroom to explore themes of trust, friendship, and the natural world.

These responses remind us why we make these books. Not for awards or recognition, but for the moment when a child leans forward in their seat, eyes wide, and whispers: "I think I know what the secret is."

What's Next for Woodland Wonder Tales

We're not ready to share details yet — but we can tell you that the woodland world is far from finished. Hariët and Finnigan have more adventures ahead of them, and the forest still has secrets to reveal.
