Meet the Animals of the Forest: A Guide for Young Readers
Share
The woodland is full of wonderful creatures, each with their own personality, habits, and home. Whether your little one is just discovering nature or already a budding wildlife enthusiast, this guide is the perfect introduction to some of the most magical animals of the forest.
🦔 The Hedgehog
Hedgehogs are nocturnal little wanderers, most active at dusk and dawn. They love munching on beetles, worms, and berries, and curl into a spiky ball when they feel scared. Did you know a hedgehog can travel up to 2km in a single night? They're braver than they look!
🦊 The Fox
Clever, curious, and full of mischief — foxes are one of the most adaptable animals in the woodland. They live in family groups called "earths" and are known for their bushy tails and bright amber eyes. Foxes communicate through a range of barks, howls, and yips.
🦉 The Owl
Owls are the wise guardians of the night forest. With their silent wings and sharp eyes, they can spot a mouse from 50 metres away in near darkness. The tawny owl's familiar "twit-twoo" is actually two owls calling to each other!
🐿️ The Squirrel
Energetic and endlessly entertaining, squirrels spend autumn burying nuts to eat in winter — and often forget where they've hidden them! Those forgotten caches actually help new trees grow, making squirrels accidental gardeners of the forest.
🦌 The Deer
Graceful and gentle, deer are often spotted at the edges of woodland at dawn and dusk. Fawns are born with white spots that help them hide among dappled sunlight on the forest floor. They're one of nature's most beautiful sights.
